How to get the most out of your bike shop Do your research: it helps if you know what you're looking for. Talk to friends, hire a bicycle or test-ride a friend's bicycle, read bicycle books, magazine reviews and surf manufacturers' websites to get an idea of your options.
Time your visit: Try to go to your bike shop on a weekday, outside of lunch hours and well before closing time, so staff can spend more time with you. Shop around: Bikes are big items and shops can only carry a limited range. Cruise the stores to find a bike you like. Your favourite bike shop should be able to order it in for you. Ask questions: It's important you understand why you're being recommended one bike over another. Getting the best price Customize: Check the bike has the components and tyres you want. Changing them at the time of purchase is usually cheaper than doing it later. Accessories: Once you've decided to buy a bike most shops will fit any accessories you buy for free. Think about buying water bottle cages, front and rear lights, mudguards and luggage racks. You might also be able to drive a good bargain on accessories such as helmets, shoes, gloves and clothing if you're buying the lot at once. Analyze: The cheapest isn't always a bargain. Sales are only good if you'd buy that bike at full price anyway. There's no point spending money on a bike that isn't perfect for you. Check that an outlet offering super-low prices offers warranties and follow-up service. Do your research about any brand you haven't heard of before you buy.
